Classification of adhesive bandages
There are now many types of adhesive bandages available on the market. Originally designed to apply pressure and stop bleeding, they are suitable only for minor wounds. With advances in technology, innovative varieties have emerged, including cartoon‑style bandages, transparent water‑proof bandages, and larger‑size bandages tailored for more extensive injuries.
According to the 2018 Medical Device Classification Catalogue of the National Medical Products Administration, adhesive bandages are classified as:
Sterile, single-use adhesive bandages are classified as Class I medical devices and are intended for the care of superficial wounds such as minor cuts, abrasions, and lacerations.
Non-sterile, single-use adhesive bandages are classified as Class I medical devices and are intended for first aid and temporary dressing of superficial wounds such as minor cuts, abrasions, and lacerations.
Both are typically available as adhesive bandages in sheet or roll form, consisting of an adhesive‑coated substrate, an absorbent pad, an anti‑adhesion layer, and a release liner. The absorbent pad is generally made from materials capable of absorbing exudate. The ingredients contained therein do not exert any pharmacological effects and are not absorbed by the human body.
